What is Juvéderm?

Juvéderm® is a collection of FDA-approved hyaluronic acid dermal fillers designed to restore volume, smooth wrinkles, and enhance facial features.

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in the body that attracts and retains moisture, helping keep skin hydrated, plump, and youthful-looking. Each Juvéderm product is formulated with a different consistency and is designed for specific treatment areas, allowing your practitioner to customize treatment based on your facial anatomy and aesthetic goals.

The Juvéderm collection includes:

  • Juvéderm XC: Softens lines and folds around the mouth and enhances lip volume.
  • Juvéderm Voluma: Restores lost volume in the cheeks and mid-face while providing a subtle lifting effect.
  • Juvéderm Volbella: Enhances the lips with soft, natural-looking volume and smooths fine lines around the mouth.
  • Juvéderm Vollure: Treats moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds while restoring volume in areas with frequent facial movement.

At WIFH, your practitioner will recommend the Juvéderm product or combination of products best suited to your concerns, helping you achieve balanced, natural-looking rejuvenation.

About Juvéderm XC

Juvéderm XC is a hyaluronic acid dermal filler perfect for correcting issues with the lower face.

  • Concerns patients have about the lower face include:
    • Lines around the mouth, also known as parenthesis and officially named nasolabial folds
    • Lack of fullness in the lips
    • Lines around the lip border often called smokers’ lines
    • Lines from the lower corners of the mouth down toward the chin referred to as marionette lines
  • Many people ask, “What’s the difference between Voluma and Juvéderm?” The biggest differences are the molecular weight/thickness and the cross linking of the hyaluronic acid molecule[40].
  • What it really comes down to is where the products are going to be injected.
  • Juvéderm XC is used to fill more surface lines, so it is injected within the dermis, where it bonds to the water found in the skin, giving a very natural, soft look and feeling[41].

About Juvéderm Voluma

Juvéderm Voluma is a dermal filler suited for correcting concerns with the mid-face.

  • Voluma is designed to create more volume in the cheek area that depletes as we age[42].
  • Voluma competes with other fillers like Sculptra and Radiesse that have historically been used for the cheeks and mid-face.
  • When comparing these dermal fillers, Voluma wins out in several ways.
  • Results from Sculptra are gradual, and patients will need several injections. Once injected, it encourages the body to make new collagen to plump and give the face volume[43].
  • Voluma is a hyaluronic acid dermal filler that is injected into the cheek area to rebuild and restore volume loss that tends to deplete and succumb to gravity as we get older[44].
  • Many people begin to lose volume in their thirties, but what they tend to notice more are the lines that begin to form from their nose to their mouth.
  • By plumping and restoring the cheek area, Voluma lifts the lower face upward, softening those lines around the mouth and restoring youthful cheek volume.
  • Voluma typically lasts for about two years.

About Juvéderm Volbella

Juvéderm Volbella is an FDA-approved hyaluronic acid filler used to enhance lip fullness and soften the appearance of smokers’ lines above and around the mouth.

  • Volbella is among the few injectables that is highly effective in smoothing the fine lines above the lips, as well as fine lines on the cheeks.
  • Juvéderm Volbella is formulated with Vycross technology, which blends different molecular weights of hyaluronic acid to deliver natural-looking results that last for about one year[45].
  • What makes Volbella a popular choice compared to other dermal fillers is that it’s a soft, malleable product that effectively smooths superficial lines around the mouth without adding too much volume or projection to the lip[46]s.

About Juvéderm Vollure

Another member of the Allergan family of fillers is Juvéderm Vollure, which can be used for both fine lines and deep folds.

This product is softer than Juvéderm Ultra Plus, making it a good choice for areas of high facial movement.

Vollure can be used to treat:

  • Parenthesis lines (lines around the nose and mouth)
  • Marionette lines (lines from the corners of the mouth to the chin)
  • Volume loss in the lips and cheeks

Juvéderm Vollure works particularly well in treating cheek hollows.

Results generally last up to 18 months.

Atlanta Juvederm FAQs

What is Juvederm XC?

Juvederm is a hyaluronic acid-based cosmetic filler used to fill and plump those moderate to severe lines around the nose and mouth (parentheses), and the marionette lines (the lines from the corners of the mouth to the chin).[47] These lines are injected with Juvederm to restore volume loss and smooth away the unwanted lines. The results are immediate and can take years off of the face. Juvederm is also a great option for adding volume to the lips. Hyaluronic acid is naturally occurring in our bodies so this filler provides a natural look and feel.

What is Juvederm XC used for?

Juvederm XC is used to smooth away lines around the nose and mouth (parentheses), the marionette lines (the lines from the corners of the mouth to the chin). It can also be used to augment the lips.[48]

Is Juvederm XC safe?

Because hyaluronic acid is naturally occurring there is a low risk of side effects. The most commonly reported side effect of Juvederm is temporary redness and swelling at the injection site[49]. Any time a needle is being inserted in the skin there is always the risk of bruising. We advise patients if they are preparing for a special event to have their filler at least two weeks ahead of time in case they experience swelling or bruising. If patients experience swelling or bruising it typically resolves in three to seven days. Other less common risks can include:

  • Redness, itching, firmness and lumpiness in the injected area.
  • Do not use if pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Patients using substances that reduce coagulation, such as aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may experience increased bleeding with resultant bruising at the injection sites
  • Vascular occlusion
  • Infection

How long does Juvederm XC last?

Juvederm XC can last 6-12 months. The length of duration will depend on how quickly the body metabolizes the product.

Is Juvederm XC the same as Voluma?

Both Juvederm XC and Voluma are cosmetic facial fillers. Voluma is designed to restore volume loss in the mid-line face (cheeks). It doesn’t bond with the water in the skin allowing it to lift and contour the area. Juvederm is designed for the lower face to smooth and fill lines. It does bond with water for a plumping effect.
