Getting Juverderm XC in Atlanta

What is Juvederm XC?

Juvederm XC is a non-surgical treatment option available to address signs of aging in the lower face. The procedure specifically targets the lips, as well as the lines around the mouth and chin.

Juvederm XC helps smooth away or fill the laugh lines (or parentheses), running from the bottom of the nose to the corners of the mouth. It may also be used to correct marionette lines, which are the lines from the corners of the mouth running down to the chin area.1

Juvederm XC can also be used to augment or plump the lips. Since Juvederm XC is made of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the body, it helps to add volume and hydration while maintaining the natural shape of the lips using the body’s own moisture. Putting Juvederm in the lips will not result in “duck lips,” though this is a common misconception. Injector technique is very important when it comes to lips.2

The beauty of using fillers to add volume is patients can use as much or as little as they want to get the look they’re after. As we are injecting, patients will have a mirror and will be able to tell us when they are satisfied with the look. Lips do tend to swell, but not to worry. It dissipates fairly quickly over several days.

Juvederm is a hyaluronic acid-based cosmetic filler.3 Our bodies naturally make hyaluronic acid and collagen to plump our skin, but as we age, they begin to deplete, causing the skin to loosen and lines and wrinkles to form.

Juvederm is typically used for those moderate to severe lines around the nose and mouth (parentheses), the marionette lines (the lines from the corners of the mouth to the chin). These lines are injected with Juvederm to restore volume loss and smooth away the unwanted lines. The results are immediate and can take years off of the face.

Juvederm is also a great option for adding volume to the lips.

Juvederm provides a very natural look and it feels soft under the skin. The nice part about Juvederm is patients can use as much or as little as they need in order to achieve the look they want.

Based on clinical studies, Juvederm injections produce a very low occurrence of adverse events.4 The most commonly reported side effect of Juvederm is temporary redness and swelling at the injection site.

Any time a needle is being inserted in the skin there is always the risk of bruising. We advise patients if they are preparing for a special event to have their filler at least two weeks ahead of time should they experience swelling or bruising. If patients experience swelling or bruising it typically resolves in three to seven days.

Other less common risks can include:

  • Redness, itching, firmness and lumpiness in the injected area.
  • Do not use if pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Patients using substances that reduce coagulation, such as aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may experience increased bleeding with resultant bruising at the injection sites
  • Vascular occlusion
  • Infection

The Week Before Your Procedure

  • 3-5 days before having your facial filler you should avoid medications like aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oils and vitamin E as they can increase your risk of bleeding and thus bruising.
  • Limit alcohol a couple of days in advance, again as this may cause increased bleeding and bruising.
  • If you are on a prescribed anti-coagulant, please consult with your prescribing physician before having your facial filler.
  • Notify your injector if you have any auto immune disorders that might be a contraindicator.

The Day of Your Treatment

There is no real prep involved on the day of your treatment. It is always preferred that you come in with a clean face (no make-up), however if you are coming from work, we will cleanse the area to be injected

If you typically exercise, we recommend doing that before coming in for your appointment as rigorous exercise is not recommend for the rest of the day.

What to Expect During the Procedure

A numbing cream will be applied to the area of the face to be injected. This will remain on the skin for approximately 15-20 minutes before the treatment begins. The numbing cream allows for additional comfort during treatment. Juvederm XC also contains lidocaine (a numbing agent) which provides for additional comfort during the injecting process.

Once the area is numb, the cream will be removed and the area will be cleansed.

Juvederm will be injected into the areas of concern. The injector will periodically massage the area to evenly distribute the filler. This also helps to reduce swelling. At intervals during this process, the injector will have the patient use a mirror to inspect the progress and to get patient input that the correction is to their satisfaction.

Once complete, the injector will again cleanse the injection sites and Arnica will be applied. Arnica helps to prevent bruising from occurring. Patients will also be offered an ice pack to reduce swelling.

Pain/Discomfort

The numbing cream used prior to treatment is very effective. In addition, Juvederm XC contains lidocaine, a numbing agent to provide even more comfort during treatment. Patients will feel pressure and possibly minor discomfort, but the process is very quick, and the result is so worth it.

Treatment Duration/Frequency

Treatment time takes approximately 45 minutes including numbing time.

Juvederm can last anywhere from six to twelve months.

Recovery is minimal. Expect immediate swelling. Bruises can show up hours or even a day or two later. It is recommended to ice the area on and off for the first hour which will help reduce swelling and minimize the chance of bruising.

The next day patients could experience mild tenderness in the injected area.

Swelling and/or bruising usually resolves within three to seven days.

It is always preferred that patients wait until the next day to apply make-up, but if that isn’t possible, we recommend waiting at least three hours before applying.

Because patients can experience swelling for up to two weeks post injection, remember to plan appointments accordingly, especially if the patient has an important event coming up.

We believe consultations are very important when considering an injectable and/or facial filler. Our consultations give us the opportunity to get to know the patient and understand exactly what they are looking to correct and achieve with cosmetic fillers. At the consultation the patient will meet with Dr. Kulkin or one of our advanced injectors to discuss which filler option is right for them. We know our patients’ time is valuable and for that reason we can schedule both the consultation and treatment for the same time, just notify us when scheduling so that we book the appropriate amount of time.

The price of Juvederm XC is typically between $500-600/syringe.
