Find Your Evening Skin Care Routine

As you may know, the nighttime skin care routine that will yield the best results for you is not the same as what will work for someone else. If you tailor a routine that’s geared to the type of skin you have, you can maximize the benefits of the products and procedures you use, and create and maintain radiant, healthy-looking skin. Your evening skin care routine is especially important because you aren’t using makeup or exposing your face to negative environmental factors, so your products can really sink in and be more effective.

Nighttime Skincare Routine for All skin types (normal)

In general, you’ll want to start your nighttime skin care routine by removing your makeup and using a cleanser suitable for your skin type. Then, moisturize with a product that includes antioxidants, peptides, and vitamins to help your skin rejuvenate overnight.

Incorporate an eye cream into your routine, they can address a multitude of issues such as dark circles, puffiness, fine lines and wrinkles. Consider adding weekly treatments like a mask to address specific problems; masks can keep the skin exfoliated allowing your skin care product’s active ingredients to penetrate and work better.

What’s Your Skin Type?

Dry Skin: Using a glycolic acid exfoliator each night can help speed up cell turnover. Massage your face after cleansing with a beauty oil or night cream with vitamin E to stimulate oxygen production and waste removal. Use a thick, creamy moisturizer or night cream that will absorb into your skin and nourish it while you sleep.

Oily Skin (Acne-prone): Do a double cleanse with a foaming or gel-based cleaner to first remove surface grime, then clean skin and remove bacteria. Use a salicylic acid-based toner for dissolving oil and dead skin, and use an oil-free moisturizer. A weekly clay mask may help prevent or treat acne issues. You want to keep your pores clear overnight, so they breathe and rebalance oil production.

Combination Skin: Look for a good, general cleanser for all types of skin that will clean without stripping your skin of oils and nutrients. You need to follow up with toner for skin-balancing and repair, then consider using a retinol-based product as your night cream. Make sure your moisturizer is oil-free.

Mature Skin: After cleansing, massage your face for five minutes to stimulate oxygen and waste removal. Use a glycol acid or alpha hydroxy product before bed, and follow with a retinol cream to strengthen skin.

Irregular Pigmentation: Whether you suffer from redness or pigmentation from sun damage or acne, you can add products to your routine that will help even out your skin tone and calm your skin down. Lightening products and de-stressing masks can help you recover from the daily damage done by the environment.

Also, all skin types benefit from extra moisture to help skin retain elasticity and radiance, so have a morning skincare routine, drink water throughout the day and use a humidifier at night. Most importantly – get some rest!

Your skin benefits the most from a good night’s sleep, when it has time to regenerate and rebuild skin cells, absorb and distribute nutrients, hydrate your skin, and stimulate collagen production. Bad sleep can also tighten capillaries and cause dull skin and hair, negating the effects of your beauty products.

So, “beauty sleep” is truly important – make sure you get enough!
