No matter your age or skin type, you need an effective morning routine that’s convenient enough for you to do every day. The right morning routine, with products that work for you, will protect your skin from the elements, encourage the growth of new skin, and brighten your complexion.

All skin types (normal)

Start by washing your face. Use a cleanser to eliminate oil and bacteria that has collected on your skin overnight. Use a toner or balancer to complete the cleansing process and soften skin. The morning is a great time to apply products loaded with antioxidants, such as Vitamin C or green tea, which protect the skin from free radicals.

Apply a moisturizer and eye cream to hydrate the skin. Sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher with broad-spectrum protection is a must; some moisturizers include sunscreen, but note that most people do not use enough moisturizer to offer sufficient UV protection so it is best to use a separate moisturizer and sunscreen.

Morning Skincare Routine for Dry Skin

Make sure your products are gentle, and do not strip the skin of moisture. Start with a gentle cleanser and then add an antioxidant serum to protect and nourish the skin. Top it off with an emollient moisturizer and eye cream to hydrate skin and prime for makeup. For dry skin it is especially important to exfoliate a few times a week to rid your skin of dead skin cells. Drink plenty of water, and don’t forget the sunscreen!

Morning Skincare Routine for Oily Skin (Acne-prone)

A morning routine is especially important for those with oily skin. Cleanse with a cleanser infused with l-lactic acid or salicyclic acid. Use a toner or balancer next – one with witch hazel might be especially helpful because of its anti-inflammation healing properties. Follow this with an acne treatment, if needed. It is important to exfoliate skin a few times a week to help reduce oil and prevent breakouts. Apply a lightweight, oil-free moisturizer and sunscreen. If the moisturizer feels greasy during the day, then use it at night only but still wear a daily sunscreen.

Morning Skincare Routine for Combination Skin

You basically have two skin types, and it makes sense to treat these areas differently. First use a mild cleanser, followed by a toner or balancer to oily areas. If you have breakouts, use an acne treatment to those trouble spots. Then apply a lightweight moisturizer all over, concentrating mainly on dryer areas. Lastly top with sunscreen.

Morning Skincare Routine for Mature Skin

Wash your face with an exfoliating cleanser, then a balancer. Next use serums that reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and other signs of aging for a more youthful appearance. Apply an anti-aging extra rich moisturizer and eye cream. It is important to treat the eye area as this is the first place to show signs of aging. Follow with sunscreen.

Skin With Irregular Pigmentation:

After cleansing and balancer application, use a serum designed to even out skin tone along with Vitamin C to brighten. Then apply a moisturizer. When lightening existing hyperpigmention it is essential that you wear a physical sunblock daily and reapply throughout the day. The sun’s rays will make discoloration darker. You may wish to add a primer such as a CC cream (color correcting) as the last step to your routine, after moisturizing and sunscreen, to improve your complexion and act as a base for your makeup.

CosMedix Rx Clean, Benefit Balance, Simply Brilliant, Pure C, Emulsion and Reflect.)

Your morning routine should include cleansing to remove impurities that have collected overnight (assuming you have a regular nighttime routine), moisturizing, then protecting your face from environmental pollutants it will encounter during the day.

NEVER forget sunscreen! Just because you aren’t outside doesn’t mean you are getting the effects of the sun’s rays through your windows in your car, work or at home. Remember, too, that daily activities such as exercise, sleep, and a healthy diet can help improve your skin.
