What to Expect Before and After miraDry Treatments

Table of Contents

If you’re interested in having your underarm sweat glands removed through the miraDry treatment, though, it’s important to learn what to expect before and after the procedure so that you can feel more prepared when you go into your first appointment. Read on for insights on what to expect before and after miraDry treatments so that you know what’s coming up and know how to get ready for it.

How the Procedure Works

The process of using miraDry is very simple. The device uses technology that effectively eliminates underarm sweat glands without harming any other tissue. An injection of a special solution into these glands causes them to absorb moisture, which eventually evaporates, leaving them dry and inactive. After treatment, this can prevent you from sweating by gradually removing your body’s ability to produce sweat; you’ll soon be left with healthier skin beneath your arms. This will help reduce odors, so it’s just one less thing you have to worry about each day!

Preparation for the Procedure

The first step to getting ready for a miraDry treatment is pre-treatment. You will be given instructions regarding prepping the area being treated. One of the steps is to shave the area before your procedure so that no hairs are standing between you and an effective result.

Your physician may also recommend that you refrain from certain activities before your procedure. This gives your body ample time to recover and ensures that you get optimal results when treatment is complete. Once you’re ready for treatment, it’s important not to use makeup or lotion on these areas before and even after treatment.

On The Day of The Procedure

On the day of the procedure, you’ll want to come to your appointment wearing clothing with a loose structure for men, including a tank top or loose t-shirt. That might be tank tops with a sports bra and cami for women.

The procedure typically lasts a little over an hour. You’re welcome to bring headphones to listen to music or movies for entertainment during that time. You may find it relaxing, or not – everyone is different. No real preparation is needed before your treatment. Your provider will ask you to sign some forms, but after that, they’ll discuss any questions with you and let you know what will happen during your appointment (including how long it will last).

You may also experience some minor tingling or stinging during your procedure. To minimize these sensations, you will be given a local anesthetic. Your provider will monitor you closely to ensure everything goes smoothly with your treatment. If you feel uncomfortable, let us know right away so we can adjust for maximum comfort.

Post-Procedure Care

Most patients experience minimal discomfort after undergoing miraDry treatment. A few hours following your procedure, you may notice some minor irritation or redness around your area(s) of treatment. For these reasons, you should apply a light moisturizer to lessen any itching or drying. We recommend using a non-perfumed lotion or cream as perfumes may cause some irritation.

Patients may also experience tenderness for 1-2 days post-procedure and are recommended to take mild pain relievers, such as Tylenol or Advil. It’s important to avoid any rigorous activity for the first week or two after your procedure. Doing so can increase chances for complications and swelling, all of which can affect treatment outcomes.

Patients will notice that their treated areas may feel numb or tingly for several weeks after treatment. This is a result of disrupted nerve endings and typically subsides following treatment. However, if you continue to experience discomfort during these initial months, we recommend discussing your options with your doctor.

Pain Management and Complications

Although some patients experience minor irritation, itching, or burning immediately after their treatment, these symptoms are easily treated with over-the-counter pain relievers. You may also notice a bit of swelling or bruising after your procedure; however, neither should last more than a few days at most.

It’s important to keep the area clean and iced following the procedure. You may be instructed to take an over-the-counter pain reliever (like Advil) or a prescription pain reliever. Depending on what you do for work, most patients return to work in just one day, though you should check with your doctor on their instructions for your specific condition. Generally speaking, most patients experience little to no side effects from miraDry and see good results within weeks of treatment!

Irritation, itching, or burning is sometimes experienced immediately after treatment.

Over-the-counter pain relievers should easily treat these symptoms. Occasionally, some swelling or bruising can occur following your procedure; however, neither should last more than a few days at most. It’s important to keep the area clean and iced following your procedure to minimize discomfort.
