Dermal fillers can be somewhat uncomfortable but, our dermal fillers contain lidocaine, a common anesthetic, which helps patients be able tolerate the “pinch and pressure” of being injected. After any treatment, our injectors will send our patients home with an ice-pack to help alleviate any discomfort.

Depending on where the the patient is being injected, a topical numbing cream will be applied for 15-20 minutes prior to being injected to to help with the comfort level, especially for lip filler.

Botox and Dysport are not particularly painful, but for some, they will feel mild pain at the injection site. Some would say it feels like a slight pinch.

Our clinicians also use several techniques to make our patients as comfortable as possible.

Based on clinical studies, injections produce a very low occurrence of adverse events. Since a needle is being inserted in the skin there is always the risk of bruising. They are typically very tiny and easily covered up by make-up. Some patients may experience a headache afterward, but this is temporary. Having your forehead injected can make it feel heavy the first time you have it done.

Other less common risks can include:

• Redness, itching, firmness and lumpiness in the injected area.
• Do not use if pregnant or breastfeeding
• Patients using substances that reduce coagulation, such as aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may experience increased bleeding with resultant bruising at the injection sites

Patients recovery time from any botulinum or dermal filler may vary. Not all patients bruise, but some swelling and bruising can last for up to two at the site of injection.

Due to the possibility of bruising we recommend scheduling any dermal filler appointments at least 1-3 months in advance to any major event.

Any botulinum appointment should be scheduled 2-4 weeks in advance.

If a patient has a last minute event and needs a quick botulinum fix, (Botox or Dysport) we recommend the patient to get Dysport as it can kick in as early as 1-3 days.

Botox® works by blocking the neurotransmitters to the muscles, temporarily reducing the movement. Without movement, the lines and wrinkles are not as prominent and, in many cases, go away.

There are safety concerns and side effects that come with any medication, and that includes neurotoxins. While there are side effects that you can read about below, Botox® injections are an FDA-approved procedure, and are perfectly safe when overseen by a doctor – even over years of use.

Botox® results typically last 3 to 6 months, but those results also depend on the number of units injected and how quickly you metabolize the product. Botox® is a customizable treatment. We will ask patients what their areas of concern are and how much or how little movement they would like to have. Patients can still have movement in the treated area with neurotoxin, if that is the look they desire. The more injected the less movement a patient will have. However, it is also best to note that the higher the dose, the longer the results will last.

As often as we get this question, there is no hard and fast timeline for neurotoxin. The more units of Botox® you have injected, the longer it will last. Each person’s body metabolizes it differently, which is also a factor in how long neurotoxin will last – and how often you choose to get it. Most people chose to get injections every 3-4 months for optimal results.

No. The needles used to administer Botox® are very tiny. You may feel a small prick when it enters the skin, but the treatment is quick and comfortable. No numbing is required for this treatment.
