Wrinkles? Fine lines? No problem! Botox is the number one aesthetic procedure in the world and reduces those fine lines and wrinkles, giving you a more youthful appearance.
If you are considering using Botox, our expert injectors share the basics including how it is used, what areas can be injected, and what it can do for you.
What is Botox?
Botox is an injectable drug made from botulinum toxin type A. Which yes, you may have heard is related to botulism. However, you can’t get botulism from receiving Botox injections as Botox is not a live strain of Botulism! When injected into your muscle tissue, it temporarily limits muscle movement, which smooths away those fine lines and wrinkles.
Over 6 million treatments of Botox are administered each year, and WIFH injects more Botox than 93% of cosmetic practices in the country.
Botox works best on:
- Forehead lines
- Crows feet
- “Frown” Lines
- Lip Lines
The following are also very popular areas for Botox injections:
- Lip Flip
- DAO (Depressor Anguli Oris)-turns up the corner of the mouth.
- Platysmal bands (bands in the neck)
- Masseter Muscle (jaw, TMJ)-At can also help to debulk the jaw line
- Bunny lines-lines on nose near bridge (squint lines)
- Lateral eyebrow lift
In some instances, Botox can be used on the chin, and corners of the mouth.
Since Botox interrupts muscle mobility, it is only effective on wrinkles that are caused by muscle movement, such as wrinkles from frowning or smiling, not those caused by skin laxity.
Keep in mind, while Botox is generally considered safe, there are risks. Because of this, Botox injections should only be performed under a doctor’s care and supervision.
How Long Does Botox Last?
Generally, you will begin to see improvement in fine lines and wrinkles several days after treatment, but it can take up to two weeks for full results to be seen.
Results typically last three to four months. The fine lines and wrinkles will gradually return and look the way they did before treatment if you do not continue using Botox. These returning wrinkles might be less severe than they were before since the muscles have been immobilized or relaxed for an extended period of time from the Botox injection. For this reason, many people use Botox as a preventative treatment to keep fine lines and wrinkles from forming.

How To Prepare for Botox
To reduce the risk of bleeding or bruising, you should discontinue taking all supplements such as fish oil, Aspirin, or Ibuprofen a week before your treatment. If you have been prescribed an anticoagulant, you should consult with your doctor before moving forward with Botox injections.
If you exercise regularly, you should do that prior to your injections, as it is recommended to refrain from rigorous exercise for the remainder of the day following treatment.
What to Expect During the Procedure
Before treatment starts, you and your practitioner will discuss which areas that you would like to treat and how much correction that you are looking to achieve. While it is a common misconception that when you get Botox, your face will be frozen, this is simply not true! The less Botox you use, the more movement you will have.
Once the number of units has been determined, and the area to be treated has been discussed, the treatment area will be thoroughly cleansed, and your practitioner will draw up your Botox. Treatments are quick and last about 15 minutes at WIFH in Atlanta.
Rest assured that Botox injections are quite comfortable, and no numbing is needed in the area being injected. Once administered, the area will again be cleansed and Arnica cream will be applied. Arnica cream soothes the area and helps prevent bruising.

How Often Do I Need Botox Treatments?
The more units of Botox® you have injected, the longer it will last.
Botox treatments are quick and you will be in and out of the office within 15 minutes. While results can last three to four months, several factors can influence how long your Botox results will last, including:
- The number of units that were injected
- The area that was treated
- And the rate that your body metabolizes the Botox.
