Facial & Chemical Peels FAQs

What will a chemical peel do for the skin?
A chemical peel is a skin-resurfacing/exfoliating treatment in which a chemical solution is applied to the skin to slough away the top layers of skin. There are a variety of different chemical peels available and they can address skin conditions like: acne, acne scars, fine lines and wrinkles, pigmentation/sun damage, tone, texture and overall skin health. Once the dead skin is removed it reveals smoother, softer, younger looking skin.
What will I look like right after a chemical peel and during the next few days?

There are a variety of different peels available. We offer superficial and medium depth peels. Immediately following a superficial peel your skin may appear a little pink, which subsides pretty quickly. Superficial peels do not cause the skin to slough off, so you should not experience any shedding. These peels can be done as frequently as every 2 weeks. There is no down time with these peels.

Medium depth peels are different. We offer the full line of VI Peels. Immediately following the application of the VI Peel your skin will look slightly tan or have a yellowish tint. You may also notice the skin is a bit pink. The VI Peels are self neutralizing and you will leave our office with the peel still on your skin. You will be provided with at-home skincare products and instructions of when to cleanse the peel from the skin and how to use the products to continue the peel process. The first two days following the peel your skin will feel tight and pigmented areas might appear slightly darker. On approximately day three, patients will begin to peel. The first signs of peeling usually begin around the mouth and chin areas. By day six or day seven patients will be done peeling. Keeping the skin moisturized can help make the peeling tolerable. Whatever you do, do not pick or peel the sloughing skin, let it come off on its own.

How many peels are required to show an improved look?
A single peel will achieve some repair and add a healthy glow to the skin. Skin conditions like acne scars, pore enlargement and hyperpigmentation might require multiple applications to produce more dramatic results.
What should I expect during my treatment?
Depending on which peel is chosen for your skin, procedures may vary. Your skin will be thoroughly cleansed, then prepped with a medical degreaser to remove any traces of oil. Your clinician will then start applying the peel solution to your skin. Most peels remain on the skin between 3-10 mins, but some are designed to be self-neutralizing and stay on for 4 hours. Most patients describe feeling a warm, prickly sensation, or mild stinging/itching when the peel is first applied to their skin. This is temporary and subsides after a couple of minutes. After the peel is neutralized and removed, we will apply moisturizer and SPF, when appropriate.
