Getting Volbella XC in Atlanta

Volbella is one of the newest dermal fillers on the market. Volbella is also a part of the Juvederm family of cosmetic facial fillers. Volbella is an FDA-approved hyaluronic acid filler that’s used to enhance lip fullness and soften the appearance of “smoker’s lines” above and around the mouth. It can also be used to get rid of the “violin strings” or very fine lines on the cheeks.  Volbella is one of the few cosmetic fillers that is highly effective in smoothing the fine lines above the lips, as well as fine lines on the cheeks.1

Juvederm Volbella is formulated with Vycross technology, which blends different molecular weights of hyaluronic acid to deliver natural-looking results that last for about one year.2 What makes Volbella a popular choice compared to other dermal fillers is that it’s a soft, malleable product that effectively planes superficial lines around the mouth without adding too much volume or projection of the lip.

Volbella is one of the newest members of the hyaluronic acid-based family of cosmetic fillers made by Allergan. Our bodies naturally make hyaluronic acid and collagen to plump our skin. Volbella is designed to smooth the mild and fine lines on the lower face. It does a great job correcting those fine ‘violin string’ lines on the cheeks, mild lines around the mouth as well as lines above the lip (smoker’s lines or water bottle lines). Volbella fills these lines to smooth out the skin and restore a youthful look. The results are immediate.3

It can also be used in the lips. Full lips are very popular these days thanks to celebrities sporting perfectly shaped lips. When Juvederm Volbella is injected in the lips, it gives patients a hydrated look. It does plump, but it does not give a lot of volume. So, for patients who are looking to add subtle volume to the lips, this is a great product. For patients looking to really augment their lips, we would recommend another cosmetic facial filler.

Volbella provides a very natural look and it feels soft under the skin.

Based on clinical studies, Volbella injections produce a very low occurrence of adverse events. The most commonly reported side effect of Volbella is temporary redness and swelling at the injection site.4

Any time a needle is being inserted in the skin there is always the risk of bruising. We advise patients if they are preparing for a special event to have their filler at least two weeks ahead of time in case they experience swelling or bruising. If patients experience swelling or bruising it typically resolves in three to seven days.

Other less common risks can include:

  • Redness, itching, firmness and lumpiness in the injected area
  • Do not use if pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Patients using substances that reduce coagulation, such as aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may experience increased bleeding with resultant bruising at the injection sites
  • Vascular occlusion
  • Infection
  • Granuloma

The Week Before the Procedure

  • Three to five days before having a facial filler patients should avoid medications like aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oils, and vitamin E as they can increase the risk of bleeding and thus bruising.
  • Limit alcohol a couple of days in advance, again as this may cause increased bleeding and bruising.
  • If patients are on a prescribed anticoagulant, they should consult with their prescribing physician before having a facial filler.
  • Notify the injector of any autoimmune disorders that might be a contraindication.

The Day of Treatment

There is no real prep involved on the day of treatment. It is always preferred that patients come in with a clean face (no make-up). However, if they are coming from work, we will cleanse the area to be injected

If patients typically exercise, we recommend doing that before coming in for the appointment as vigorous exercise is not recommended for the rest of the day.

What to Expect During the Procedure

A numbing cream will be applied to the area of the face to be injected. This will remain on the skin for approximately 15-20 minutes before the treatment begins. The numbing cream allows for additional comfort during treatment. Volbella also contains lidocaine (a numbing agent) which provides for additional comfort during the injecting process.

Once the area is numb, the cream will be removed and the area will be cleansed.

Volbella will be injected into the areas of concern. The injector will periodically massage the area to evenly distribute the filler. This also helps to reduce swelling. At intervals during this process the injector will have patients use a mirror to inspect the progress and to get the patient’s input that the correction is to their satisfaction.

Once complete, the injector will again cleanse the injection sites and Arnica will be applied. Arnica helps to prevent bruising from occurring. Patients will also be offered an ice pack to reduce swelling.

Pain/Discomfort

The numbing cream used prior to treatment is very effective. In addition, Volbella contains lidocaine, a numbing agent to provide even more comfort during treatment. Patients will feel pressure and possibly minor discomfort, but the process is very quick, and the result is so worth it.

Treatment Duration/Frequency

Treatment time takes approximately 45 minutes including numbing time.

Volbella can last up to 12 months.

Recovery is minimal. Expect immediate swelling. Bruises can show up hours or even a day or two later. It is recommended to ice the area on and off for the first hour which will help reduce swelling and minimize your chance of bruising.

The next day you could experience mild tenderness in the injected area.

Swelling and/or bruising usually resolves within 3-7 days

It is always preferred that you wait until the next day to apply make-up but if that isn’t possible, we recommend waiting at least 3 hours before applying.

Because you can experience swelling for up to 2 weeks post injection remember to plan your appointments accordingly especially if you have an important event coming up.

We believe consultations are very important when considering an injectable and/or facial filler. Our consultations give us the opportunity to get to know the patient and understand exactly what they are looking to correct and achieve with cosmetic fillers. At the consultation patients will meet with Dr. Kulkin or one of our advanced injectors to discuss which filler option is right for them. We know our patients’ time is valuable and for that reason we can schedule both the consultation and treatment for the same time, just notify us when scheduling so that we book the appropriate amount of time.

Like other injectables, the cost of Volbella is typically priced per syringe. While cost will significantly vary depending on your location, injector’s experience, and the specific issues you’re looking to treat, the average cost of Volbella can range between $400-500 per syringe.
