miraDry® for Underarm Sweating: How it Works

miraDry for Underarm Sweating

If you sweat a lot under your arms, you may be familiar with feelings of embarrassment and anxiety as a result. There’s a name for this condition – axillary hyperhidrosis. While it seems like it might be a petty concern, hyperhidrosis can limit your professional, physical and social activities and lower your confidence as well as your hygiene levels. However, there’s a new treatment for hyperhidrosis called miraDry®.

What is miraDry®?

miraDry® is a safe, effective, non-surgical procedure designed to disable the sweat and odor glands in your underarm area, reducing underarm odor and wetness. This procedure, which was approved by the FDA in 2011, is non-invasive.

For the treatment, your underarm is numbed in one of two ways. Most commonly used is a series of lidocaine injections. Each underarm can require 75-100 lidocaine injections. This allows for very localized numbing, but does not provide a full nerve block, so in most cases patients cannot tolerate the higher settings miraDry® is capable of delivering.

A newer technique is slowly being adopted by doctors to numb the underarm for the miraDry® procedure. This technique uses a single lidocaine injection in each underarm. A tiny puncture is made at the injection site and a tiny cannula is inserted under the skin to infuse a lidocaine and epinephrine solution.

The solution creates a numbing pillow or buffer between the skin and the nerves. This technique allows the highest power to be used without the patient feeling anything.

The miraDry® hand piece is placed directly on the skin. It applies light suction to the skin so the microwaves can directly target the sweat and odor glands in the area. Once in place timed microwave energy is delivered to destroy the sweat glands. It also cools to provided added comfort.

The entire process takes less than 90 minutes; afterwards it is highly recommended that you keep ice on the area to help with swelling. Once the anesthetic wears off you may have some mild tenderness in the underarm area. However, you’ll be able to go about your daily business immediately.
