Microneedling Aftercare: Getting The Most Out of Your Rejuvapen Treatment

microneedling aftercare rejuvapen

Microneedling and the Vampire Facial

Microneedling is Collagen Induction Therapy. The most therapeutic devices are powered microneedling devices that use tiny needles to make micro-channels or injuries in the skin to then stimulate collagen and elastin formation, the building blocks of skin tissue. At WIFH, we use Rejuvapen.

Microneedling has become a popular anti-aging procedure, and some of you might be familiar with the “Vampire Facial,” which the Kardashians have made famous. The Vampire Facial is simply microneedling with PRP, or platelet-rich plasma. An important note: PRP is an add-on to microneedling and is not offered at all practices. If your skin care provider does not offer PRP, the practice may instead offer a growth factor treatment following your microneedling procedure, which utilizes the same theory as PRP. In PRP, the plasma has growth factors to basically supercharge healing and collagen stimulation. Growth factor serum creates the same result without the need to draw blood.

Benefits of Microneedling

There are a number of amazing benefits of microneedling with Rejuvapen.

  • Improves fine lines and deeper wrinkles
  • Reduces acne scars
  • Softens stretch marks
  • Evens skin tone
  • Lightens hyperpigmentation and sun spots
  • Reduces appearance of pores
  • Firms and smooths skin texture
  • Heals scars
  • Reduces broken capillaries and spider veins
  • Brings back the glow for fresher, younger-looking skin

Microneedling Aftercare

Microneedling offers amazing benefits to getting and keeping your skin beautiful, but like any good skin procedure there are important aftercare instructions that you will need to follow to get the most out of your skincare treatment.

Since Rejuvapen microneedling creates micro wounds in the skin, patients cannot return to their normal skincare routines right away. In fact, immediately after your treatment, you will look as though you have a mild to moderate sunburn, and your skin may feel warm and tighter than usual. Keep in mind, these effects are normal and they typically subside within a few hours after treatment, but can take up to 24-48 hours for complete resolution.

Don’t worry: your skin professional will discuss post-procedure skincare following the treatment to help soothe, calm, and protect the skin. Continue to treat the skin gently for three days after microneedling, and you may resume your normal skincare routine after day three post-treatment.

Our Recommendation at WIFH for the Best Microneedling Aftercare:

  1. CLEAN – Use a gentle cleanser and tepid water to cleanse the face for 72 hours post-treatment, and gently dry the treated skin. Always make sure your hands are clean when touching the treated area, and do not use a Clarisonic or other powered cleansing brushes for at least one week after your treatment.
  2. HEAL – We recommend serum antioxidants post-treatment, as its properties are ideal to help heal the skin by soothing and lessening irritation.
  3. HYDRATE – Following your Rejuvapen treatment, your skin may feel drier than normal. Hyaluronic Acid is an ideal ingredient you can use to hydrate and restore the skin back to perfect balance.
  4. STIMULATE – In the days following your Rejuvapen treatment, and as the skin starts to regenerate, collagen-stimulating peptides are ideal to maximize the effects of the stimulation already started by the microneedling.
  5. MAKEUP – We recommend you do not apply makeup for 24 to 72 hours after the procedure. In addition, do not apply any makeup with a makeup brush, especially if the brush is not clean.
  6. PROTECT – Immediately after the procedure, your skin professional will apply a broad spectrum UVA/UVB, SPF 25 or greater sunscreen to your skin. We recommend a chemical-free sunscreen. Keep in mind that you should continue to use a sunscreen everyday—not only the days following your procedure—as part of your skincare routine to protect your skin from sun damage and premature aging.

Additional Microneedling Aftercare Precautions

  1. To ensure the proper healing environment, do NOT use any Alpha Hydroxy Acids, Beta Hydroxy Acid, Retinol (Vitamin A), Vitamin C (in a low pH formula) scrubs or anything perceived as “active” skincare for one week post treatment.
  2. Do not use any powered cleansing brushes like Clarisonic for one week post treatment.
  3. Avoid intentional and direct sunlight for 72 hours.
  4. No tanning beds.
  5. Always wear sunscreen.
  6. Do not go swimming for at least 72 hours post-treatment.
  7. Do not exercise or participate in strenuous activity for the first 72 hours post-treatment. Sweating and gym environments in general are harmful and filled with bacteria, which may cause adverse reactions in your skin.

WIFH Microneedling Treatment Kit

At WIFH, we provide a post-treatment kit that we recommend using for 72 hours after your microneedling treatment for best results. Most facilities probably offer a similar treatment kit, but you may be required to purchase the kit, whereas our kit comes with the procedure. The kit is made up of products made by iS Clinical, including: a gentle cleansing complex, Sheald recovery balm, and copper firming mist.

We hope you have learned more about Microneedling aftercare and what to expect after your Rejuvapen treatment at WIFH! Visit our office for your free consultation to find out if Rejuvapen is the right procedure to meet your skincare goals.

I had done a microneedling like
6 months ago 3 sessions, my face is very itchy i dont what to do can you please help me

If you completed your microneedling treatments 6 months ago, I don’t believe the itchiness you are experiencing is at all related to your microneedling treatments.

My face and neck are itchy after a single microneedling session. I had microneedling done on my lower face and neck. my upper face is not itching but my lower face and neck are.
The only thing I can attribute it to is microneedling, because my neck never itches like this.
Have you received any more feedback regarding some patients itching after this procedure?

Reply
Lindsay Spires

Yes, the skin feel very tight and itchy if you aren’t keeping it hydrated well enough. Try using some nourishing skin care products and see if you can get the itching to subside. This is all part of the process, but it can be avoided if you care for your skin by keeping it hydrated so it can heal. Best of luck to you.

white vinegar has natural antimicrobial properties. We have our CO2 patients do vinegar cleanses post procedure. However, I wouldn’t try and use vinegar if you suspect you have an infection, that should be looked at by a medical professional as it could require an antibiotic cream, etc.

I had 3 skin pen treatments I still see the upper lip has many lines I am to go in January, I think I should go sooner??? Hi

Reply
Lindsay Spires

Hi Donna,

We typically recommend a series of at least 4 treatments for general skin rejuvenation, but we recommend more if you are addressing specific issues like acne scars or fine lines/wrinkles. We space our treatments every 4 weeks. With each treatment it is igniting the bodies healing response, which is the production of collagen, but this process does take time to complete.

Microneedling has become very popular over the last few years, but not all of the technologies are the same. Results will vary based on the depth of penetration of the needles and the number of needles the tip has. Some facilities are also using “dermal rollers” which can be used at home, but don’t offer the same results as powered microneedling devices. I’m not certain which device the facility you are visiting uses, but this can effect results as well. I would definitely recommend returning for treatment before January as you mentioned. You may also see if you can add on a growth factor serum with your treatment. The use of growth factors will help to speed of the healing process and enhance your results. Additionally, depending on the depth of the lines above your lip you may need more treatments. Cosmetic fillers also do a nice job if the lines deep.

We use the Rejuvapen device and our patients are seeing great results. Please let us know if you have any questions, happy to help.

Thanks for the advice! I just had my very first microneedling appointment today and I’ve been given B5 hydrating gel and another hydrating gel. Can you recommend a good peptide?

Reply
Lindsay Spires

Hi Sue,
Thank you for taking the time to read our post, I’m glad you found it helpful. I would recommend iS Clinical’s Reparative Moisture Emulsion. This product has cooper peptides and growth factor along with other antioxidants & enzymes that help breakdown free radicals and repair the skin. Growth factors are great to be used post treat or even on a daily basis, it helps to speed up healing and cell renewal. I love this product so much I use it morning and night. It’s not heavy or greasy.

There are certainly other products out there that you might like. There are many different peptides and they each offer something beneficial for your skin, but if you want to pair it with microneedling I would look for one with cooper peptides, the growth factor would just be a bonus. Do you know if they infused the skin with growth factor serum during or after performing your microneedling procedure?

Hi,

I just read the review and found it very helpful. I wanted to ask you what serum will you use before iS Clinical’s Reparative Moisture Emulsion. I’m doing the research to do use dermal rollers at home and I’m in the process of finding a good hyaluronic acid or vitamin C serum based.

Reply
Lindsay Spires

You will want to use a serum product while you are using the dermal roller on the skin. It will help to prevent scratching of the skin (so the roller doesn’t drag on the skin). iS Clinical HydraCool serum works well for that. I would also recommend using a product with growth factor in it as well. Skin Medica has the TNS essential serum, iS clinical has: Youth Serum, Super Serum Advance +. The growth factor helps the skin to heal faster. Products with Cooper Peptides are also great to use post microneedling as well. We like iS Clinical Copper Firming Mist, the application is super easy and it does a great job of nourishing the skin. Obagi makes a great Vitamin C serum and it comes in different strengths.
You may want to have a skincare consultation so that they can put together the best products for you skin.

I did last year 3 procedures, then I stopped as I had to travel to Dubai and sun exposure was imminent.
I have large pores and some comedons due to polichistic ovaries.
This year I started again. I do 2.0 mm needles and exfoliation is really heavy, which is good.
But I am not sure still it helped me to get rid of large pores… within some weeks (last year) my skin got back… 🙁
Do I need to do more than 3/4 procedures ?
Can I use oils/serums – always trying to avoid them not to clog my pores …
Thank you. 🙂

Reply
Lindsay Spires

Hi Ana,
The number of treatments each individual will need varies. Since you are trying to correct large pore size you may need between 4-8 treatments. We recommend spacing them every 4 weeks. The place where you go for treatment, do they apply growth factors to the skin? Growth factors help promote healing and cell renewal. If you aren’t already using a tretinoin I would recommend using one. Pairing your microneedling treatments with products that also work to reduce pore size might help get results quicker. Keep us posted! Best of luck to you.

I just had prp done yesterday. I was not prepared for the aftercare thinking I would just use my normal moisturizers but after reading your information I’m not sure they’re appropriate. Can you tell me if any of the following will help? Clinique moisture surge concentrate or intense, philosophy miracle worker or Clinique smart with spf 15?

Reply
Lindsay Spires

Hi Barb,

We provide our patients with a post-procedure skin care kit following their microneedling procedures. You certainly want gentle products for the first few days post treatment. I would recommend calling the facility that performed your prp and see what they recommend or if they believe your Clinique products are fine to use. It’s hard to recommend since I’m not sure how aggressive your treatment was. What I will recommend is a sunscreen of at least 30 spf. I hope your treatments go well, you are well on your way to having beautiful, glowing skin.

Reply
Lindsay Spires

While you’ll notice a change in your skin about a week after your first procedure it takes up to 3 months before the collagen production process stops and you would see final results. A series of treatments is needed for it to produce transformative change in your skin. We recommend spacing treatments out every 4 weeks, you can certainly go longer, but this is the length of time we find produces the best results.

Reply
Lindsay Spires

We typically offer our microneedling in packages of 4 and 8. If you are only interested in a single treatment the cost for 1 microneedling treatment without growth factor is $250 and $295 with growth factor. Please let me know if you have any questions, I’m happy to help in any way I can.

I’m using Aloe Vera 99% on my face to cool it down and hold in moisture. I’m appkying Image SPF 30 on top of the Aloe Vera gel. Is that ok?

I use Murad products and I have the sensitive serum. Is that one ok to use?

Reply
Lindsay Spires

Aloe vera is fine for calming, however, we provide our patients with an at-home skin care kit to be used post microneedling. These products are designed to aid in the healing process as well as nourish the skin for best results. Cooper peptides are great to use as well as products with a growth factor. It is a good idea to use sensitive products and sunscreen. I’m not that familiar with Murad products, but if you are seeing good results I would say continue using them.

Yes you can apply sunscreen. We always recommend nourishing the skin after microneedling, so yes I would apply at least moisturizer to the skin. We like products with copper peptides and/or growth factors as it helps the skin heal faster.

Help. I dermarolled with a 1.5mm 4 days ago and got sunburnt now my stretch marks are raised. What should I do?

Reply
Lindsay Spires

The stretch marks are more than likely just swollen from the treatment and then sun exposure. I would recommend keeping the skin very hydrated and not exposing it to any more sun until the area has completely healed. You may also try icing it to help relieve the swelling. I hope it resolves for you quickly. Best of luck to you.

What is the best pre and post care for micro needling / derma rolling? I’m wondering what should be used to prep the skin and what should be used immediately after, later that first night, and so forth. I recently bought a derma roller for my face and have had great results so far. So I attempted to try the technique on my lower ab, stomach stretch marks. Old stretch marks. But now my skin is still red and irritated, almost blotchy. The stretch mark it’s self is very red where as before it was just white, note even silver, just white. I’ve kept it clean, used HA twice, and kept Vit E oil on it all day. Should I not be using the vit E oil yet? I like to use a moisturizer on top of the HA. Help!

Reply
Lindsay Spires

Redness is a normal reaction to microneedling and derma rolling. I assume you are using a new needle roller each time or are you sterilizing it after each use? Different areas of the body will respond differently with treatment. I would imagine the redness will dissipate within 48 hours. We recommend using soothing nourishing products. You mentioned using Hyaluronic acid which is a great choice. Vitamin E is also nourishing. You might look into a growth factor as well as a product with copper peptides and a Vitamin C, these products will work in tandem with the collagen stimulation from the derma roller. Best of luck to you.

I got a microneedling done in December. I am about to do it again in a couple weeks. I am getting treated for light scarring and hyperpigmentation. I noticed incredible results the first round and look forward to round 2. However i am moving just after and won’t be able to receive another microneedling session for probably 6 months. They said it would take about 3 for removal. Will that time span reverse any of the affects or will i be okay to go that long? Also anything i can use to make the results even better?

Reply
Lindsay Spires

Staying on a treatment schedule is certainly best if you are looking for correction verses maintenance. It can take up to 12 weeks after your last microneedling treatment for full results, so if you have to wait 6 months you aren’t losing ground it just might take longer for you to get to your end goal which it sounds like is resolution of the scarring and hyperpigmentation. I would continue to use nourishing products while you are away:lighteners, brighteners, growth factors, copper peptides, etc. Consult with your provider before you leave and see what they recommend. We wish you luck.

Hi! I just had my first Rejuvapen procedure about five hours ago. I forgot to ask if I am able to use the moisturizer I have, which is Kiehl’s Ultra Facial cream. And how soon after my procedure, do I use it?

Reply
Lindsay Spires

I assume that your provider applied a growth factor or some type of serum to your skin before you left their office. You are able to use a gentle cleanser and hydrating lotion/cream/serum to keep the area hydrated immediately following treatment (that evening). We like for our patients to use nourishing products with antioxidants, copper peptides and growth factors to help aide in the healing process for the best results. Best of luck to you.

I had a third Rejuvapen treatment two days ago and this time I have had a pimply looking rash appear in the areas it was performed. Although my skin wasn’t too red to begin with it isn’t looking as radiant as it did before. It looks like I have eczema. What could have happened? The skin feels a bit itchy too. I have applied some Bioeffect Serum.

Reply
Lindsay Spires

I would contact the office that performed your treatment. It sounds like this is a result of the treatment. Often if you don’t use enough lubricant on the skin or a product to create a slip on the surface of the skin the needles can drag on the skin creating a rash-like or “rug burn” appearance. It should resolve without an issue, but I would take a photo and let the provider who performed your treatment see what you are experiencing. The itchy feeling is also normal, as the skin heals it can cause the skin to be itchy. Be sure to keep using nourishing products to speed up the healing process. Best of luck to you.

Yes, can start using the gentle cleanser immediately following your treatment (that evening). Hyaluronic acid is fine to use, however something with a growth factor or copper peptides will help to speed the healing process and amplify results. Keep us posted on your progress.

Yes, you will still see results spacing them 2 months apart. It actually takes about 8 weeks or more for the collagen production cycle to complete anyway, so your treatment schedule is certainly beneficial.

Can I wash my face after the session because others say that you cannot apply any products or avoid sweating so are the water.

Reply
Lindsay Spires

You are able to wash your face following your microneedling procedure. Typically we recommend waiting until that evening since we have applied growth factors and other healing serums into the skin following the procedure, we want to give those products time to penetrate and work. We too advise patients not to exercise following their procedure. The skin is open and sweat could introduce bacteria and other things during the healing process. Best of luck to you.

Reply
Lindsay Spires

I would not use a Tretinoin or retinol until your skin has completely healed following your microneedling treatment. A vitamin D cream is probably fine since it helps with irritation. I would recommend not using any abrasive or exfoliating products until your skin has completely healed. You are able to use nourishing products that promote healing. We recommend products with copper peptides, antioxidants and growth factors.

Hi I just had a microneedling treatment 6 days ago and on the evening of day 5 I incorporated IS clinical Active serum which felt very strong. I noticed a light circular mark on my skin this morning – a mark that wasn’t there yesterday. Do you know if this could be the result of the serum? Also if so, could this be temporary or a permanent discoloration to the skin?

Reply
Lindsay Spires

It is likely that this mark you are seeing on your skin is from the Active Serum. Active Serum is a very concentrated, exfoliating product. We tell our patients not to use any exfoliating products or treatments for at least 7 days post microneedling. Your skin is in the process of healing and will just become unnecessarily irritated with exfoliation. I would imagine this is temporary, but it’s hard to say without seeing you. Give your skin some time to rest and repair and perhaps use some nourishing, calming products. Hopefully this mark will resolve quickly.

Reply

Any healing can take longer for those individuals that smoke. Smoking also takes its toll on the skin over time. It’s great that you are working on quitting. You will still see changes in your skin with the microneedling treatments, but it may take longer for the skin to heal and for results to be seen. Be sure to use great skincare products to help improve and nourish your skin. We love microneedling and after a series of treatments you should see a great improvement in your acne scars.

It will depend on what kind of treatment it is. I wouldn’t do anything too abrasive like a peel for 2 weeks. You could do something nourishing that helps to promote healing like an oxygen facial or hydrating mask. I’m not that familiar with the Modvellum line of skincare treatments. I would let her know when you had your last microneedling treatment and see what she suggests or if she would recommend pushing this treatment out another week.

Hi, I got my second microneedling done today with a powered pen device. I am confused by after care as salon said to avoid all moisturisers and cleansers for a full 72 hours. Just use warm water but after first treatment it took. A full seven days for my skin to not look so red and I thought maybe I should moisturise sooner. I am a few hours post treatment and will be indoors all night – they have given me a hylauronic acid sheer mask to use this evening but can I gently cleanse tomorrow and wear sunscreen?
I have a hylauronic acid serum and was told to avoid using it for 72 hours but reading here I’m thinking maybe that’s unnecessary. My skin feels like it needs a moisturising cream and I’m worried if I don’t moisturise for 72 hours I’m hurting my skin more!

Reply
Lindsay Spires

Yes, it should be fine to use a gentle cleanser and sunscreen. We allow our patients to cleanse the evening of their treatment, you want to keep the skin clean as the treatment has created small punctures in the skin. Hylauronic acid is a great hydrater and is fine to use any time. While the skin is healing you want to nourish it with serums and things that replenish moisture, etc. We encourage appropriate product use for our patients post microneedling.

Is it too soon to use any benzoyl peroxide if it has only been 4 days since my Microneedling treatment? This was my second treatment. With my first one I did not break out. With this second treatment my chin has exploded with a huge cystic blemish as well as some small Whiteheads. What should I put to resolve it? I am using tns complex recovery serum.

Reply
Lindsay Spires

Do you always use the TNS Complex recovery serum? Since you are 4 days post it is probably fine to use benzoyl peroxide as long as your skin is intact-meaning not peeling or irritation from your microneedling treatment. Be sure to keep your skin very clean and don’t let it dry out too much by using the benzoyl peroxide. I would recommend calling your skin professional and just letting them know what you experienced after this treatment.

As long as your skin is intact, meaning it’s not peeling or still irritated from your microneedling treatment it is probably fine to begin using your benzoyl peroxide to help clear up your chin. I still have pink skin 3 days after microneedlig treatment. Is this normal? My esthetician gave me a Hyaluronic serum. I’ve only been using this, but I feel like my skin may need more hydration. Could I use Cerave pm moisturizer or skinceuticals phyto corrective serum to help with redness?

Reply

Was this your first treatment? Typically most of the redness dissipates within 24 hours, but some people to stay red a little longer. The skinceuticals phyto corrective serum is fine to use, anything hydrating and nourishing is good. Be sure to keep your skin protected, sunscreen is a must. If the redness persists I would be in contact with your skin specialist that performed your microneedling and see what they suggest.

I’m not sure what kind of toner you use, but most toners help to restore the skin’s pH which will help the skin better absorb products and for the products to be more effective. We typically recommend waiting 3 days after microneedling to begin toning and using vitamin C products. For the first couple of days it is important to hydrate and nourish the skin so that it can heal.

My aesthetician only told me to wash with mild soap in the am, and apply vitamin E lotion 3-4 times a day. I’m just wondering if this is normal, or if there’s anything I can do to help my skin heal, thank you for your time.

Reply
Lindsay Spires

Was this your first microneedling treatment? It’s hard to say why you may still be experiencing redness 3 days after the treatment. It could be that your skin reacted to the numbing cream that was applied and it is causing some additional redness and swelling. It could be that you had a pretty aggressive microneedling treatment and it is just taking a bit longer to heal. I would be in touch with your aesthetician and let them know what you are experiencing and they maybe able to guide you better since they will know more about your treatment than we do. You may also ask it they use a growth factor during your treatment, this helps to ignite the healing process, we use it for all of our microneedling treatments.

Yes, they should apply a numbing cream and let it sit for a while before proceeding with your microneedling treatment. We apply a numbing cream and allow it sit for an hour prior to treatment.

Reply
Lindsay Spires

You definitely want to hydrate your skin following your microneedling treatment. If your skin feels dry, tight or itchy you should moisturize any time during the day. You can have some mild flaking after your microneedling procedure, but full on shedding like you have received a chemical peel is really not common after microneedling. If you are really shedding that badly I would follow up with the person who performed your treatment and let them know what you are experiencing.

Reply

Our bodies naturally make growth factors to heal our skin. There are many lab manufactured human growth factors available for use during skin procedures and even at home. You may also have heard of microneedling with PRP (platelet rich plasma), where your own blood is drawn, spun down and the plasma is used on the surface of the skin during and after the microneedling. Growth factor and PRP help speed the healing process and improve your results. Skin products rich in peptides are great to use after your microneedling treatment to nourish the skin and enhance results.
There is certainly a difference in just having microneedling and having microneedling with growth factor.

Is it normal to have scratches after a microneedling procedure was done? A part of my nose looks like it was scratched by a cat. If so, what would you recommend I apply for faster healing?

Reply
Lindsay Spires

have scratches on the skin would indicate to me that they didn’t use enough “slip” on the skin. The skin needs to be lubricated with something in order for the needles to penetrate the skin. Our perhaps this is due to the inexperience of the provider. You can get areas of extreme redness afterward, but it isn’t typical to have scabbing afterward. I would notify the facility that did your treatment and maybe take a few pics so they can see. You could try using a product with copper peptides in it this could help speed the healing.

Is the aftercare of microneedling and nano needling the same? I just did nano needling last wednesday, a day after i get redness and some parts of my face was swollen, feels burning and itch. Today on the fourth day, my skin started to peel off. I looked like im having a mild sunburn. My esthetician told me she infused a collagen serum with the nano needle and told me to hydrate. I thought nano infusions are supposed to be less aggresive. Is this normal too?

Reply
Lindsay Spires

Microneedling and nano needling are different, but yes I would do the same after care following nano needling as I would microneedling. The redness and swelling is normal with both of these treatments. Even mild flaking is also normal. You are correct, it is less aggresssive than microneedling. But, while the depth of penetration is not as deep with nano needling, the purpose for the treatment is to deliver products and their ingredients into the dermis allowing them to be more effective. Depending on what they infused into the skin through these shallow channels it could case some irritation and peeling of the skin. Perhaps they used something more than just collagen serum which may be causing this lasting irritation. I would certainly let them know what you are experiencing so that they can make adjustments with your next treatment.

Did the redness dissipate after you came in and cooled off? I assume you were playing outside. The skin probably just flushed from being hot and the sweat could have irritated the skin. I would have recommended cleansing the skin and putting a hydrating product on the skin to nourish and calm it. I don’t believe this should have any negative impacts on your results. You should be fine.

I got my microneedling done yesterday Friday. My face ain’t to bad and not red at all just a light pink but I’m thinking cuz of my skin tone. I’m using my moustrizer stem cellular don’t know of it’s too soon. When can I exfoliate? And what can I do to help with getting better results ??

Reply
Lindsay Spires

Your moisturizer should be fine to use. I would wait to exfoliate until your skin has completely healed (5-7 days). Using high quality skin care products at home can help to enhance your results and always wear sunscreen. You may consult with the facility performing your microneedling and ask if they can put together a treatment plan for you that would include their recommendations of at-home skin care.

I am using high-ended anti-aging skincare products like Menard Embellir and menard authent cream (the whole set cost $3.400) and I am 34 with great skin. However I have acne scars. I did micropen with PRP 3 treatments last year. Do I still need to do micropen with PRP or I just continue my skincare products?

Reply
Lindsay Spires

If you got the results you were looking for with your 3 treatments of micropen with PRP then you could just do 1-2 treatments a year as a maintenance treatments to maintain results. One every 6 months.

Hi Will I lose the benefits of microneedling if my next appointment is 8 weeks later (due to a prior commitments) as opposed to the 4-6 weeks later as recommended? Please advise
Thank You

Reply
Lindsay Spires

No it will not effect your results negatively to go longer than 4-6 weeks between your microneedling treatments. Results are cumulative and it can take up to 6 weeks after each treatment before the collagen production process completes, so you will be fine being treated 8-weeks following your last.

I had my second microneedling treatment yesterday. I know you are not to shower or put anything on your face for 24 hours, but what if I accidently washed my face late at night out of habit? Will that affect my results? My dr gave me Skinfuse Rescue Calming Complex and Vitamin C too.

Reply
Lindsay Spires

It’s totally fine that you washed your face following your treatment. Just be sure to use a gentle cleanser and no harsh exfoliators for 3-4 days.

Hi Lindsay!
I just got my first microneedling treatment done( my biggest concern was my acne scars) 6 hours ago and I was wondering what products to use for the first three days and when to use them. I was told not to wet my face at all the first day. She did use blue light ten minutes afterwards to heal it quickly. I read the comments about copper peptide, but would I be able to purchase it any stores or just resort to amazon and if so which would you recommend? I bought neutrogena oil free acne stress control triple action toner and a oil-free acne wash redness soothing facial cleanser. Can I start using them tomorrow morning and at night?or is it too early since it does contain salicylic acid? I want to prevent any future breakouts in between my treatments so do you think if I purchase Tria blue light to help along with the two products I bought recently would help? I was also told that chamomile tea is good to pat on my face before going to bed and plan to do so tomorrow night. Is that okay? My next appointment is in two weeks and I was wondering if that is too soon or if its okay.

Sorry for all the questions!

The key to microneedling aftercare is to nourish the skin. I wouldn’t use any acne wash or toner for the first 3-4 days as it will dry the skin out too much. I would use hydrating/nourishing topicals on the skin for the first 3 days. A gentle cleanser is best so that it doesn’t irritate the skin. Since it sounds like you are acne prone you may look into a hydrating serum. High quality skin care products are always preferred as they are more concentrated and have a great effect on the skin. Of course these products do come at a price, but you use far less of these products than you do over the counter products because they are more concentrated. We provide our patients with the iS Clinical Post Procedure Kit along with the iS Clinical Cooper firming mist. If you purchased these products you would just use them for the first 3 days post microneedling and then you could move to your regular products.

For regular everyday (not post treatment) products you might look into the Obagi Clenziderm system. It is great for people with acne concerns. Blue light therapy does help with acne, I’m not certain how well the at-home lights work, be sure to let me know.

We recommend 4 weeks between microneedling treatments, that way the skin has plenty of time to heal and begin the collagen production process. Remember that it can take up to 6 weeks before that process finishes so the results from microneedling come in time.
I wish you the best of luck!

Hi Lindsay,
Just curious since i got my first vampire facial last October 20, this year. And thinking if its no harm if i will have my ultrasonic facial on the fifth day for the best finish of my scratches and bruises?
Thank you for your time.

Lindsay Spires

I would recommend waiting until your skin had completely healed before having another treatment, especially if you have scratches and bruising. You need to give your skin enough time to heal and repair before exposing it to another aggressive therapy.

Hi, very informative page, I must say. I love your dedication to answer each and every question.
I got my PRP microneedling done on Thursday night, my skin was red over whole face except my forehead. On Friday night I noticed lots of itchy bumps just on my forehead. I did lot of cooking on Friday and even felt heat on my forehead and after an hour or so I saw these bumps on my forehead. Are they normal? Is it due to heat from the cooking or just a reaction from the treatment? I called the clinic and they just advised to put an anti inflammatory ointment. I am quite anxious about these. Please help!! 🙏🏻

Reply
Lindsay Spires

I’m glad that you reached out to the clinic that treated you. I really doubt that it had anything to do with your cooking on Friday. We don’t do PRP, so I don’t have much experience with that. Have the itchy bumps subsided after using the cortisone cream? I wonder if you had a reaction to the numbing cream they used? I would keep the clinic that you had treatment informed of your progress, especially if you aren’t seeing an improvement with the anti-inflammatory. It’s hard to say what the true cause of the irritation was. I’m sorry I can’t offer up any additional suggestions. Keep us posted on your progress and if it hasn’t cleared up after using the ointment please be in touch with your clinic again. Best of luck to you.

Thanks for your reply, the bumps have gone down but though look like deflated red patches where bumps were before. They haven’t disappeared as yet and it’s been a week now.
Another thing I forgot to mention that they did the prp microneedling on top of my active acne too. Now I am noticing new zits appearing. Is it ok to have microneedling on active acne??

Reply
Lindsay Spires

NO! You should never do microneedling if there is active acne, you’re basically just spreading the bacteria over your face, so I’m not surprised you are experiencing new breakout areas. Next time be sure to cancel your appointment if you are have an active breakout. If you just have one pimple that’s ok, they can just treat around that area. Are you using any products to help with your acne? I hope your irritation calms soon.

I just had my first micro-needlings done exactly 1 week ago due to the concerns of the moderations hyperpigmentations spots on both cheeks (small areas). The depth of the needles were penetrated as follows:
*Neck: .5mm
*Cheeks area w/hyperpigmentations: 1.8mm
*The rest of face: 1.2mm

It’s completely healed today, but I still notice the hyperpigmentations on my cheeks (where the needles penetrated the deepest). Should I heavily exfoliate my skin and use some type of bleaching agent to help make them lighter since it’s still vulnerable? Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Reply
Lindsay Spires

Do you have any flaking or superficial crusting (scabbing) on your face or neck? Even though you are a week out and your skin has probably mostly healed I still would not heavily exfoliate, especially if you have any flaking or crusting left. As long as the skin seems healed you are probably safe to resume your regular products, but I would wait a little while longer before you aggressively exfoliate.
Keep in mind microneedling isn’t like a chemical peel where the areas of hyperpigmentation will peel off with the skin. It is a process and it will take a series of treatments before you will see these areas lighten. Did the facility you visited take photos before your first treatment? If not take some yourself so that you can monitor your progress.

My aesthetician Did RS Micro needling On my face. I developed Hyperpigmentation on my jaw line , chin and cheeks . It been 6 days and my skin is not healings. I got square box of brown dots still on my face. She did 700 on my face . I told her several times it was hurting
But she keep saying trust you will love your face. They didn’t give me any instructions or product to use for post care . I can’t stop crying. I am going on a cruise for the first time in my life. After 9 years I am finally talking a few days to my self. I am a mother of an severe adult autistic son. Please help me . Is my face going to heal. I am scared.

I assume you mean RF microneedling, as I’ve not heard of RS (but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist). I would definitely call the provider that performed your treatment they may want to see you. It sounds like it could be post inflammatory hyperpigmentation from the radio frequency, but I could be wrong. It’s always best to see what your provider would recommend since they treated you, but if you were treated out our office we would tell you to keep your face very hydrated. It is important to keep the skin very moist so that it can heal. Do not exfoliate or use any harsh products that may cause your skin to dry out. iS Clinical’s sHEALd Balm would be a great option (applying several times a day). I hope this clears up quickly for you. Try not to worry too much, if it is post inflammatory hyperpigmentation it will clear up, but it can take some time. When you go on your cruise please wear sunscreen and a hat so that the pigmented areas don’t get darker. Best of luck to you.

Hello! Im on my 5th microneedling session and the dr treating me had recommended that as I am doing it for my acne scars that i need to go in every 2 weeks. I know you recommend every 4 weeks, is that for everybodys case? Will going every 2 affect me negatively? Also after the 6th session if im not happy woth results how many more can i do before saying its enough? Thank you!

Reply
Lindsay Spires

Hmmm, we have our patients wait 4-weeks between microneedling treatments regardless of the condition we are treating. Is is mandatory for you to come every 2 weeks? I would also most space them out a little further. This way your skin has time to heal and the collagen production process has started and has time to reach it’s peak before having another treatment and igniting that process again. It can take 6+ weeks for the collagen production process to complete.
Once you have finished with your package wait 8 weeks or so and see how you are looking at that point you may need more treatments if you want additional improvement. If you are good with the way your skin looks having 1-2 treatments a year just to maintain your results is a good idea.

I bought the “Glow Pro” for home use. I use it just 2 times a week. Can I still use my exfoliating cream during my OFF DAYS with the Glow Pro?

Reply

Yes, I think it’s fine to use the exfoliation cream. At home microneedling/dermal rollers aren’t as aggressive as those treatments you would receive at a Med Spa. I think you are fine using your products on your off days.

Hi. I just had my first microneedling with PRP and was told to use a mild cleanser, Skinceuticals HA intensifier and Guinot Creme Protection Reparatrice Facial Creme, followed by SPF for the next 72 hours. What do you think of that after-care regimine? Would you add anything or take anything away? Thanks!

I think this sounds good. All of those products are hydrating and nourishing, exactly what your skin needs after this treatment. These are great post treatment products.

I was told no alcohol or caffeine for 3 days prior and 3 days post microneedling with PRP? Is that necessary? I have had such a bad caffeine-withdrawal headache that I’m not looking forward to my next treatment week….
Thanks!

Reply
Lindsay Spires

Hmmm, I can understand the no alcohol since the alcohol can thin the blood, but I’m not sure why they would recommend refraining from caffeine. I would call the facility that you are going to and ask for further explanation on this. I would actually think caffeine might be good since its a vasoconstrictor, but perhaps they see it differently. I would reach out and get more information, no sense in torturing yourself if it’s not necessary.

Reply

Could it be that caffeine and alcohol are dehydrating? Maybe both would be okay in small amounts! Please let me know your thoughts! Thanks for this very informative page.

Reply
Lindsay Spires

Caffeine and alcohol are dehydrating, yes, but they are also vaso-dilators which increase blood flow to the surface of the skin, so limiting these the day before and day of your microneedling treatment is best to prevent extra bleeding. But you are right everything in moderation is probably fine, it’s more a precaution.

I just got microneedle five days ago. I have pretty bad acne. My skin looked great right after and now I have some terrible, what feel like cystic acne… I’m wondering if it is normal for acne to get worse before it gets better?

Reply
Lindsay Spires

When you went in for your treatment did you have active acne? If you had any active pustules at the time you had microneedling it is likely that that bacteria was spread causing a bad breakout (potentially causing cystic acne). If you didn’t have any active acne the day of your treatment I would find out what products were used immediately after your treatment. You Microneedling wouldn’t cause a breakout unless as I mentioned you had active acne the day of treatment or if your skin reacted to the products used after treatment. You should never have a microneedling treatment if you have any active acne.

Hi! I just had my microneedling for the first time and i am much confused with the postcare. Should i go for serum mist or serum itself or facial oil? And should i apply toner to my face or just straight for serum then sunscreen.

Reply
Lindsay Spires

What serum and mist do you have? In theory you would go with the thinnest to the thickest, so depending on what products you have I would mist then use the serum, but you will also need a rich hydrater as well. I wouldn’t use a toner for the first 3 days, but after that you are able to resume your normal skin routine provided you skin is healed. You should always use sunscreen. I’m sorry you weren’t provided better directions from the facility that did your microneedling. Best of luck to you!

Hello,
I’ve been wanting to do Microneedling. Is it a safe procedure? How will it effect my face? I have minor acne and I lose some my eyebrow hairs.

Reply
Lindsay Spires

microneedling is a very safe procedure, but be sure you have it done at a facility that had experience and will provide you with aftercare products and instructions. This is really key in getting the most out of your microneedling treatments. You will need a series of treatments if you are looking to improve your acne scars. We typically recommend 8-treatments for acne scars, spaced every 4 weeks. Results from microneedling are not immediate so you may not see the full result from each treatment for up to 6-weeks post treatment. I think you’ll really like this procedure. Go for a consultation and get more information to be sure this is the right procedure for you.

Hi, I just had my 3rd Micro-needling treatment and this time around I have two big dark burns on my cheeks. I know after she completes my treatments she applies I believe an acid serum to my face and it burns and she leaves it on for about 2 minutes my previous two times. This time she left it on for 3 minutes but each time it burns really bad. Is this normal procedure to apply the acid serum on the open wounds from the needles? The first two times I would have some dark spots and after about 72 hours they will peel off, this time I can tell it is starting to peel, but not as fast cause I am at 72 hours now and my cheeks are still covered with this dark burnt skin layer. I am just tired of everyone at work asking OMG what happened to your face as it has never been this bad after a treatment. I am doing the treatment for acne scarring. I think she went 2.0 MM this time and first time 1.0mm and second time 1.5mm. Thanks

Lindsay Spires

Yikes. We don’t apply any acid to the skin after performing microneedling. We follow up with growth factor serum, hydracool serum and sHEALd balm. After wounding the skin you should nourish the skin to promote healing, that is our philosophy at least. Had you not mentioned the acid application I would have assumed you may have had a reaction to the numbing cream applied prior to treatment, but now I would definitely agree it is from whatever serum was applied and left on for 3 minutes following your treatment. I would be in contact with the person or clinic that performed your treatment and let them know what you are experiencing so that they aren’t as aggressive next time. We adjust the depth of penetration for different areas of the face, and we uses a stamping technique for acne scars. I’m not sure how you are caring for your skin right now, but my advise would be to keep it as hydrated as possible so that when the darkened areas do peel off you aren’t left with hypo-pigmentation and whatever you do don’t pick at the skin to peel it off, let it shed on its own. Best of luck to you.

Hello! I am having my first needling tomorrow and have a few questions, sorry to bombard you!
1. Can I exercise appx 24 hrs after treatment?
2. I use a vitamin c suspension 23% with hyaluronic spheres %2 (brand: the ordinary), when can I begin using again?
3. I use a resveretrol 3% with ferulic acid 3% (brand: the ordinary) when can I begin using this again?
4. When can I begin using mild AHA cleanser? (Brand: aspect dr)

I have been advised to use hyuloric acid and copper peptides post treatment, how often can I use these?

Thank you so much! 🙂

Reply
Lindsay Spires

No make-up or exercise for the first 24 hours, after that you are fine to resume
I would wait to start back with your regular skincare routine. Give it 3 days after having your microneedling, then you can resume your normal skincare products including the AHA cleanser, vitamin C, resveretrol, etc.
You can use the hyaluronic acid and copper peptides are frequently as you need to in order to keep your skin well hydrated. Our patients typically use our post procedure skincare products for the first 3 days post procedure and then they resume their normal routine.

Best of luck to you!

How soon after a microneedling procedure can you apply the antioxidant serum such as Vitamin C or Vitamin E for the skin healing process?

I would wait 3 days for the vitamin C. Vitamin E should be fine to use right away since it is hydrating. Same goes for the antioxidant serum as long as the ingredients are nourishing.

Keeping the skin hydrated is key, so if they didn’t provide you with any aftercare products, coconut oil is fine. At least it will keep it well hydrated.

Hi, just had my Microneedling (Mesotherapy) yesterday, and good thing, there is no more redness on my face now, though they didn’t give me any after care products that I can use. So they just advise me that I can just put moisturizer and sunscreen but no make up atleast 24 hrs. Is it correct? how about they said that I will come back after 2 weeks, is it enough time then? because my really concern is my open pores.

Reply
Lindsay Spires

2 weeks is too soon to return for another microneedling treatment. I would wait 4 weeks. 1st cellular turnover takes about 30 days to cycle off. It’s best to treat once during that cellular turnover cycle. Definitely wait 24 hours to start using make up again. For the first 3 days keep your skin very well hydrated and don’t use any products with active ingredients. It’s ashame that every facility doesn’t provide aftercare products for use after microneedling. How you care for you skin afterward does effect results.

Is there anything I can do to expedite the redness dissipating? I was told that sleeping with my head propped up would help. Anything else? Thank you very much!

Reply

The redness should dissipate quickly and after 24 hours you can apply make up which will also help to hide any lingering redness. Sleeping with your head propped up would help elevate swelling, but I don’t believe that will help with redness. Keeping the skin hydrated and nourished should heal it pretty quickly. The copper peptide spray we provide our patients helps with the redness as well.
