Smartlipo - Laser Liposuction in Atlanta

Dr. Kulkin attends and speaks at laser meetings around the country on a regular basis. It is clear that in the eyes of a growing number of experts, traditional liposuction is rapidly becoming a procedure of the past. Smartlipo is a liposuction technique that was approved by the FDA in 2006. Smartlipo is laser assisted liposuction, also known as laser lipolysis, the destruction of fat cells. The laser is used in conjunction with the traditional tumescent technique, melting the fat before suctioning it from the body. The heating and melting of the fat prior to removal, creates the added benefit of a smooth appearance and tightening of the skin. In fact, Smartlipo is the only liposuction technique that effectively tightens the skin.

In Atlanta, there are many choices when it comes to liposuction. Many of you are familiar with the more traditional technique that requires the use of general anesthesia. It uses large instruments and causes lots of pain and downtime. There is also what I call “Awake Tumescent Liposuction”, with the same large instruments, pain, bleeding, bruising and downtime. Smartlipo uses small instruments, local anesthesia, and has almost no bleeding or bruising and minimal downtime. Some patients even work the same day! In fact, we have become so proficient with this procedure that many patients opt not to take the prescribed oral medications beforehand, and still have NO PAIN.

Smartlipo is done in our office using a local anesthetic. You are under the care of Dr. Kulkin, who is assisted by either, Shayna Flash, PA-C or Shannon Burdette, NP. Our patients are wide awake and talking throughout the procedure! SAFETY IS THE MOST IMPORTANT TOPIC WITH ANY PROCEDURE WE PERFORM AT WIFH. As a result, no IV or injected medications of any kind are used during this procedure; however, we can prescribe some oral medications to safely relax you. You’ll still be awake with these oral medications, but you may find yourself dozing off during the procedure. The topic of anesthesia is a very important one, as most of the complications you hear about that take place during liposuction procedures are due to the use of general anesthesia.

Smartlipo is perfect for those bothersome bulges that you just can't seem to lose with diet and exercise. We commonly treat the abdominal area, flanks, thighs and saddle bags. Smartlipo is also perfect for patients with a drooping chin or sagging jowls or the man with excess breast tissue. We frequently treat Moms who have the notorious abdominal “shelf” from a Cesarean incision.

Many of our Smartlipo patients have previously had traditional liposuction. A common complaint is that they were left with visible rippling and ridges below the skin. Traditional liposuction uses a large instrument to scrape the fat from the skin. In contrast, Smartlipo uses a laser to evenly melt the fat, which ensures a smooth appearance upon its removal. As mentioned above the laser also causes tissue tightening and collagen production that firms and tightens the skin. This is well proven in two recent studies published in the medical literature.

For many, Smartlipo is a great alternative to a tummy tuck, thus avoiding a major surgical procedure.
